River of Light
Zabriskie Point in Death Valley is well-known for views of Manley Beacon. Actually, many people think that Manley Beacon IS Zabriskie Point. It is not. I love walking around in the badlands below Zabriskie Point. It is a sure way to avoid the line of tripods at the overlook for sunrise every morning.
The Shape of Wind
The Mesquite Dunes in Death Valley are a popular attraction for tourists and photographers. This abstract perspective provides a unique view.
Study in Pine
During my first trip ever to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon at the end of this summer, I was intrigued by this grove of Ponderosa pines trees. The quality of light was amazing. It took me an hour to explore an area of trees the size of three tennis courts.
Illuminata #1
Delicate shafts of light spotlight the fall colors at Oconaluftee Overlook in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Palouse Artistry
The Palouse area in eastern Washington state has some incredible topography in the landscape. I love it because I grew up in an agricultural area and the Palouse reminds me of home, especially the people. The people I've met in the Palouse are kind, considerate, and selfless. Just like where I grew up!
Foothills Fog
When the fog forms in the valleys below the Foothills Parkway in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, it is a feast of light. If you're a photographer, bring a big appetite!
Cypress Portrait #1
I have not been as captivated by a subject as the bald cypress trees in the swamps of East Texas and Southern Louisiana. These trees and the swamps will be on my list for some time to come!
The Shape of Water #1
I have been experimenting with abstract images created by moving water and reflections. These images are so much fun to create. It is not possible to visualize the image before pressing the shutter. I love the warm and cool tones in this image.
Evening in the Cove
I was struggling to return to normality after the August eclipse when, inspired by my friends Brian and Richard, I decided to try some night photography in Cade's Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. I'm glad I did! A layer of thin fog was just starting to form as I was leaving the Cove and I saw this composition. I love the angle of the Milky Way over the tree. Thanks Brian and Richard!
Illuminata #2
The magic of the Foothills Parkway in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park!
Cypress Portrait #2
I thought a sepia tone worked well for this cluster of bald cypress trees in the swamps of East Texas and Southern Louisiana.
Alaskan Ice Cave
I sat on a rock at the opening to this ice cave. It was a fantastic location for lunch. I saw some bright flecks of gold on a tiny rock at my feet. Gold? Maybe. I'll never know!
Sand Castle Virtues
The distinctly feminine forms of the sand dunes in Death Valley are a perennial favorite subject for me!

Cypress Portrait #2
Another portrait of a bald cypress tree in the swamps of East Texas and Southern Louisiana.
Evening in the Cove
I created this image during the Tremont photography workshop while leading a group of about twenty attendees into the beautiful dark skies in Cades Cove. I don't know which was more rewarding, capturing this image or helping the attendees capture their own!
Autumn Abstract #1
A multiple exposure experiment with fall colors in the Tremont area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Infinity Range
From an airplane or helicopter, the boundary range in southeast Alaska seems to go on forever. I think it should be called The Infinity Range.
Sparks Lane Speaks at Night, Too!
This location is a popular perspective of Sparks Lane in Cades Cove. It works very well at night, too!

The Middle Prong of the Little River in the Tremont are of the Smokies is one of my favorite locations in the fall color season.

Cypress Portrait #4

Autumn Waters
This spot on the Middle Prong of the Little River so iconic that I simply call it "the spot." It was particularly nice this fall with great colors and high water due to recent rain. Icons are icons for a reason!
Crystal City
The intense blue hue in this Alaskan ice cave reminds me of crystals. Crystal City seems like a good title. Thanks to my buddy Scotty for striking such a striking pose!
Cypress Portrait #5
This location in the swamp reminded me of a stage in a theatre, curtain drawn and waiting for a photographer! I was in mud up to my calves when I took this panorama. :)
Autumn Abstract #2
A multiple exposure experiment with fall colors in the Tremont area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. For an image like this, I have found that people either love it, or it makes them sick. I hope it is mostly the former for you!
Crystal Cathedral
The intense blue hue in this Alaskan ice case reminds me of crystals. This one makes me think of a ceiling in a crystal cathedral.
Death Valley Pastels
Badwater Basin in Death Valley is often filled with water after heavy winter snows. When filled, the lake is called Lake Manley in honor of the famous William Lewis Manley. In 2017, there was just enough snow to create the beginnings of Lake Manley. A very special time!
The Shape of Water #3
Another experiment with abstract images created by moving water and reflections.
Alaskan Vista
On a workshop with the incomparable Marc Adamus, we camped two nights at this location above a massive glacier. I wish I could remember the name of the glacier, but I'll be back with Marc in 2018 and I'll let you know the!

The Sound of Sand
I saw this pattern in the sands of the dunes in Death Valley and I immediately thought of sound waves. A symphony in the sand, you might say!
Palouse Beams
This location in the Palouse is on private land and we secured the permission of the owner beforehand, just in time for me to snap this shot from the window the the car as we stopped. The Palouse is one of the most scenic places you'll ever experience, but always as permission before entering private land. It is just good manners. I was helping John Barclay on a workshop when I created this image. Thanks, John!
